about

In August of 2002, Mike Switzer and Charlie Naked hatched a plan to bring a new, fifth Defenestration Unit to life. Bringing in faces old and new, the band went through a succession of trumpet players, but otherwise largely began to start moving in a markedly different direction than before, away from free collective improvisation and towards something more structured and rhythmic. The return of Vaughan Boone on drums greatly reinvigorated things, and the fifth TDU saw the entrance of Jim Otterson on guitar, who remained with the band in all of its subsequent incarnations, on up to the end in February of 2009.

However, with this newfound attention to actual rehearsal, the band ceased recording albums weekly, and instead only recorded live performances. I'm uncertain at this time how many of these I'll find and be able to upload to document this part of the band's history, but for now, this Christmas recording should do. For much of the middle period of TDU, a Christmas show was a yearly tradition. Here's the first of them.
